Navigating 4th of July: Holiday Weekend

Navigating 4th of July: Holiday Weekend

by Savannah Carver | | Food, Nutrient, Tips | 0 Comments

The 4th of July is the day of all days to get off track with your nutrition goals...but it really doesn’t have to be that way. If you are going to a party, you probably already know what kinds of foods they are going to be serving. Most likely hot dogs, burgers, chips, cookies...and the list goes on! Let’s enjoy the day but keep our goals intact.
Tip #1

-Pre-log the foods you plan to eat. If you know you want a hamburger... log it. If you know you are going to have to have chips with your burger ... log it. This is going to give you so much peace of mind going into this party. You can avoid the guilt because you know you have a game plan!
Tip #2

-Do not hang out in the kitchen (or wherever the spread of food is). We all have done it and for whatever reason this is the place to congregate. Take your plate of food and go outside or in another room.

Tip #3

-Chew your food. A lot of times at parties we like to eat quickly so we can get back to other activities. Take the time to chew your food. Chewing at least 30x per bite will allow your body to absorb your food much easier once it gets into your stomach. This will keep you fuller longer.
Tip #4

-PROTEIN! Do not skimp on your protein this day. Get that protein in and let it work for you. Protein is going to keep you fuller longer. Carbs like chips, fruit, bread, juice are just going to be empty calories and not help with reducing hunger.

Tip #5

-Alcohol. Enjoy your day! Just remember... mixed cocktails pack a punch when it comes to excess carbs. Vodka or gin with Topo Chico and a squeeze of lemon or lime. So good! DRINK WATER! Have a water bottle near you at all times. Log these drinks ahead of time as well so you can have your game plan!
